What Is Consciousness? RE: Thursday 1/29/2026 Zoom Conversation

Hi friends,

As we prepare to gather this Thursday, I wanted to share this video that poses the question, "What is consciousness?" As you can see, this is not a Unity video because I wanted to invite people contemplate the question with thinking there is a right Unity answer. Perhaps the best question is "How do you experience consciousness?" One of the ways that I experience consciousness is as the witness of whatever I am participating in.

For example, as I am typing this, I get the sense of witnessing myself creating this post. Who is the "me" that is witnessing me create this post? To me that is consciousness expressing itself in action. Now this may seem a little confusing. But as I contemplate consciousness, I feel the sense of wonder that is curious about the distinctions between those aspects of "me' that could be considered my identity--my name, age, race, roles, personality, wants, desires, fears, relationships, etc.--and the impersonal witness that simply beholds all that I imagine "myself" to be and more. Does consciousness dwell within me or do what I am calling "I" dwell with in consciousness?

And then, what of the subconscious? There are only so many things that I can be aware of consciously. And yet, as you will see in the video, there are things that my "subconscious mind" is paying attention to that I can respond to without knowing that or why I responded to it. For example, have you ever driven home from some place familiar only to pull up to your parking spot and realize that you have no recollection of the trip?

If you can drive home without paying attention, just imagine what else your subconscious mind is responding to without "you" knowing it.

When we gather on Thursday, we will think about things together and contemplate what possibilities might exist for us if we are able to be intentional about engaging our witnessing self as well as being mindful about what we contribute to our subconscious. I look forward to our conversation. If you have any questions, reply here or email me at pedro@columbineunity.org. The zoom information for the gathering is below the video.

Fascinating video! And deeper exploration for me into this realm.

I’ve been working with a severe stroke patient who doesn’t see things on the left side. Whether in a room or a sheet of paper right in front of them.

Regaining motor functions has been been progressing, yet the ability for them to have visions of their left side is also, like a darkness as they do PT to regain motor skills.

This video is giving me more insights as to how can I integrate connections to their unconscious consciousness into their return to ‘normal’ everyday functions.

I’ve been able to activate, through touch, full sensations and body movements. But, without my physical stimulus of neurons, her ability to activate the muscles fades.

Thank You Pedro for the sharing of this video
