What Is Worth Thinking About

Recently, I got into a book called 7 1/2 Lessons About the Brain at the recommendation of my Enneagram coach. I explained to her that there are things that I don’t feel like using my brain to think about, but other people that I am in a relationship with want to think about these things. And as a result, I find myself thinking about those things and then trying to explain why I don’t want to think about those things which then keeps me in a loop about thinking about those things.

I was explaining to her that I used to be very introverted and did not like explaining myself. But because people would make up meaning for my silence, I eventually started getting really good at explaining myself under the false assumption that if I can explain myself well I would be able to go back to silence. That’s when she recommended this book and told me that what she thought I was doing was trying to be energy efficient with the assumption that my ability to articulate myself would save me time and energy in the future. It’s like an unconscious cerebral accounting system.

Well, after reading the book, it made so much sense. And I wonder if this idea would make sense to you as well. Are there things that you think about that drain your energy and other things that give you energy? How much time do you intentionally invest in the things that give you energy versus the things that your energy? And how do you determine what’s worth thinking about?

Well, I haven’t read the book, but you have me intrigued. Yes there are things that I think about that drained my energy; when I think of things, I cannot change that I would like to change in the world that trains my energy. The things that give me energy because I’m an extrovert or being with good people. Also things that give me energy or meditation in prayer and honestly the thing that gives me the most energy is being of service to others. Whenever I’m feeling down if I do something for someone else, I always feel better.
